MEET-NATURE
  1. See Custer Country Visitor Guide and MTOT Visitor Guide
  2. The best times to view wildlife are during the early morning or just as the sun is setting. Drive carefully as animals may be on the road during these times.
  3. Bald eagles are often seen on Highway 212 and Highway 7. Watch for them perched on fence posts or standing on the ground near the highway.
  4. The best times of the year for scenic drives through Custer Country are late May and late September. In May, the melted snow leaves the prairie a vibrant green. Watch for baby wildlife testing their mother's patience as they romp and play in the fresh new grass. September brings a riot of fall colors to southeast Montana. This is a great time of year to drive along the Yellowstone River, as the Cottonwood and Aspen trees provide many varying colors at various times throughout the fall season.
  5. Remember that Indian Reservations are sovereign nations with their own laws and law enforcement officers. For more information on proper etiquette, cultural differences, and general guidelines to follow while visiting Reservations, please visit the Montana Tribal Tourism website.
