The TypeRider website is up and running! We hope you make TypeRider your go-to site for planning the perfect trip to Montana and Wyoming.   This website is about real people – couples, families, and friends – who’ve had unique experiences on the roads and in the cities, on the water and in the saddle as they spent 2-5 days in this amazing area of the country. Bookmark this website, watch for what’s new, and let us hear from you. Please visit our website at www.thetyperider.com

I just returned from the International Sportsman’s Expedition in Denver.  It was attended by folks all over Colorado, and there were vendors selling everything from hunting dogs to hearing aids and safaris to Africa.  Of course, I only have to “sell” the idea of visiting Custer Country to experience the many recreational activities we offer here in southeastern Montana.  I was amazed at this show to learn how many Coloradans make it a point to drive to Ft. Smith and fish the Bighorn two or three times a year. It makes you realize that we sometimes take for granted the things we do have here.

Another pleasant surprise, whether it’s Denver, Minneapolis, or Puyallup, Washington, is the number of people who are interested in western military history and are envious of those of us who live so close to where the Battle of the Rosebud, the Fetterman Fight, and Custer’s Last Stand occurred.  They plan for months ahead to schedule visits to these historic sites, which I dare say have not been visited by a majority of people who live in Custer Country.

I was glad I had brought along a supply of Warrior Trail Guides, a fairly new publication that is a result of the efforts of the Warrior Trail Committee in Broadus and Custer Country and pays tribute to the soldiers and Native American warriors who fought in those important conflicts. The Warrior Trail actually extends from Belle Fourche, SD to Garryowen, MT and has been officially designated as an historic trail by both Montana and South Dakota. The folks at the Denver show were very impressed with the trail guides, and many are looking forward to checking out the website, www.TheWarriorTrail.com  and visiting some of the historic sites along the trail.  This is something totally unique to Custer Country. Nowhere in America can people see battlefields in almost the same condition they were when the battles raged over 100 years ago.

So take advantage of the historical riches we have in Custer Country.  See you along the Warrior Trail.

There are so many great things to do in Custer Country that it’s sometimes hard to pick one to write about. One activity that’s popular with families is spending time at a water park or a motel with a pool.  There are several to choose from in our region, including the largest one in Montana, in Billings.

In addition to the water slides and swimming pools, some of these facilities include hot tubs, wading pools and even the only “surfing wave” in the state.

Reserve a comfortable room, spend some time splashing in the water, then go out and have a meal at one of Custer Country’s great restaurants. It’s a great way to get away without going very far. It’s a great way to spend winter in Custer Country.

My pick for a unique experience in Custer Country is the 31st Annual Juried Art Exhibit at the Custer County Art & Heritage Center. The center is housed in the concrete cisterns that used to contain Miles City’s water supply. A recent renovation has almost doubled the size of this unique facility.

The juried show is an all-media exhibit.  Artists from the five-state area of Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, and Idaho provide their unique creations to the judges. Many of the pieces are offered for sale, and all are amazing testaments to the artistic talents of the area.

The Custer County Art & Heritage Center is closed until January 24 in preparation for the show. For a really great journey through the world of art, check out the Custer County Art & Heritage Center in Miles City.
