The museum is historical and chronological in content. Displays range from prehistoric times to the 20th century.
Major displays include fossils, buffalo, Indian, homesteaders, cattlemen, settlers, railroad, Civil War, and numerous miscellaneous displays that fit into those eras.
Besides the main building there are two country stores, a blacksmith shop, buggy shed, a fire hall, log cabin, a restored country school, and a large display of farm machinery.
Special displays consist of a set of authentic medieval armor, a group of carved figures from native Scoria rock, and a lovely display of turn-of-the-century gowns.
Murals on the exterior walls depict actual historic events of Glendive and the immediate surrounding area. Indian encampment, buffalo, the wagon train of early settlers, Camp Danby which was a military post, and the first site of the city itself.
Frontier Gateway Museum is located east of Glendive, on the Belle Prairie Frontage Road, just off I-94, Exit 215. About 1 mile east from the center of town.
